But if they’re charging ridiculous, prohibitive fees and only letting a few major labels take advantage of this…that romantic cry for the return of the album sounds cynical and disingenuous.
Considering that the final project in my Advanced Interactive Design class (a combination Flash/HTML/CSS web portal, which was delivered to the client as a “near-final beta”) appraised for almost $13,000, asking labels to put up $10,000 for an iTunes LP seems like a fair price. Simply put: content development needs to be paid for. The labels who claim they can’t afford the cost need to think about the real value it offers before making a decision based solely on its impact on the bottom line.
Update: According to AppleInsider, the framework used to create iTunes LP content (TuneKit) will be open-sourced and made available to all interested labels in the near future.
